Lambda_logo.jpgGregory R. Nevins

Plaintiff’s Counsel, Calhoun v. Pennington

On September 10, 2009, the Atlanta Police Department (APD) dispatched dozens of officers, including its aggressive drug-focused "Red Dog Unit" dressed in SWAT team gear, to a gay bar called the Atlanta Eagle. Eagle patrons heard antigay slurs, were detained, searched, and forced to lie face-down in spilled beer and broken glass while background checks were run on everyone. Inside the bar the APD found no drugs or illegal weapons, nor was anyone arrested for illegal sexual activity. Not a single patron was charged with any crime.

The Georgia ACS Chapter, Lambda Legal, The Stonewall Bar Association, and The King & Spalding LGBT Affinity Group sponsored a discussion with Greg Nevins on the Fourth Amendment and §1983 civil rights claims arising from the raid.

Gregory Nevins is Supervising Senior Staff Attorney in the Southern Regional Office of Lambda Legal, the oldest and largest national legal organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and people with HIV.

 Proudly presented the following CLE:

Critical Legal Needs of the Transgender Community:

How Your Practice Can Help

Presented by Cole Thaler,

Transgender Rights Attorney, Lambda Legal

Transgender people (those whose identity as men or women differs from the sex assigned to them at birth) have legal needs that are profoundly unmet.  Gender transition requires interaction with legal and administrative processes that can be confusing and intimidating to the non-lawyer.  Pervasive discrimination means that even simple procedures like changing one’s name can become insurmountable hurdles without legal assistance.  And common aspects of life such as finding housing, maintaining employment, getting married, seeking child custody, or even walking down the street can become fraught with difficulty for transgender people who are often viewed with suspicion or treated as criminals.  Systemic bias contributes to poverty, homelessness, and incarceration, and low-income transgender people are desperately in need of culturally competent and unbiased legal assistance.

Cole Thaler, Lambda Legal’s national transgender rights attorney, addressed the transgender community’s areas of greatest legal need.  Attendees heard the personal stories of several transgender people who have faced legal challenges.  The CLE provided an overview of advances in relevant areas of the law – from changing one’s sex designation on identity documents to employment law to family law and beyond.  It concluded with concrete suggestions for practitioners seeking to expand their practice to address the pressing needs of this increasingly visible community.

Free Symposium with CLE

Friday, April 11, 2008 Noon - 7:30 pm

Emory Law School

Lawrence v. Texas Conference Image

ACS and Lambda Legal along with the Georgia Lawyer Chapter of ACS and the Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia presented a Symposium hosted at Emory Law School by the Emory ACS Student Chapter and Emory EGALA on:

Lawrence v. Texas   Five Years Out: Can The Promises Of Liberty And Equality Be Fulfilled?”

When the Supreme Court issued Lawrence v. Texas in 2003, it overruled its own precedent in Bowers v. Hardwick and, citing liberty interests and invoking equality principles, struck down the remaining state laws criminalizing private consensual intimacy. Beginning the day it was issued, the case has sparked continuing debate over its jurisprudential underpinnings, central meaning and likely impact. Five years later, it is time to take a fresh look at Lawrence and consider its effect to date. Justice Kennedy, writing for the majority, noted that, “As the Constitution endures, persons in every generation can invoke its principles in their own search for greater freedom.” With that perspective in mind, this will be an occasion for looking forward and exploring, with respect to sexual orientation and gender identity, how the law should advance.

With keynote by Paul Smith, Partner at Jenner & Block, the Supreme Court litigator who argued Lawrence in cooperation with Lambda Legal, as well as panels of experts in the field representing a variety of viewpoints, this symposium promises to engage all who attend. Join us for a lively discussion on key constitutional and legal issues affecting the equality, liberty and daily lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
